Read full description of the books:
The title here is very deceiving because there's no mistressing at all going on here. Cooper works for his father's real estate developer and in order to achieve his dream and strike out on his own, he has to get Ariel to give up her property. Unfortunately, she's rather tied to it, so she's not going down without a fight. Of course, she has to deal with her pesky attraction for Cooper, his charm and his total ability to schmooze her. As I said though, there's no mistress taking. This is entirely a romance about a real-estate developer and his target battling it out while they're falling in love. They do have a one-night stand, but it's the next day when Cooper realizes he wants a long-term relationship and that he might have just completely turned Ariel away from him.
So these kind of stories, with the real estate developer and the person about to lose their home, livelihood and dreams are just not for me. Maybe it's because I cannot fathom how you could look at the embodiment of the loss of your dreams and your home (as Ariel pretty much says Cooper is doing here) and think about having sex, let alone being able to fall in love with them. I'm sure it's possible, but my brain has trouble wrapping itself around that - and this is compounded by Ariel's constant arguing and hating on Cooper. And because they're locking horns thorughout the book, there really isn't a lot of time for them to share anything about each other, like Ariel's reasons for being so adamant or Cooper's determination to get away from his father, so it doesn't feel like they connect (other than sexually). Cooper doesn't really get to demonstrate a good side, because we see so much of him as the selfish, determined and IMHO not so bright, enemy. So I struggled to believe in their love...felt more like lust actually. Now I say that Cooper's not so bright because he's simultaneously trying to take Ariel's property (which he can clearly see upsets her) and keeps telling himself that he just has to finish this business with her, and then he can focus on starting a relationship with her...as though she'd have him after he goes through with the deal. I just can't understand how he didn't see that. And then I say that Cooper is without a doubt selfish because, as I understand it, he only had one year left on the contract with his father. So, he was willing to set aside her dreams (and he knew it) so that he could have one less year working for his father's company. That niggling little detail stuck with me and had me realizing how selfish he was...and that sort of selfishness doesn't randomly vanish when he says he loves her, nor does the fact that he spent the whole book looking down on the kind of people that Ariel associated herself with.
I did like the angst of the story, and the fact that the heroine was pretty much a strong individual who marched to her own beat and was unapologetic about it. She didn't necessarily melt to goo every time he came near her...in fact, she was able to physically push him away on quite a few occasions. I respected Ariel as a character and thought she was nicely written.
